Bekannt geworden ist Jiří Kovanda durch seine Aktionen und Interventionen der späten 1970er Jahre auf den Straßen von Prag, mit denen er beiläufig das Alltagsleben für einen Moment unterbrach. Wie ein roter Faden durchzieht die (Un-)Möglichkeit zwischenmenschlicher Kommunikation seine frühen Performances. Beispielsweise drehte er sich unvorhergesehen auf der Rolltreppe um und fixierte kurz die hinter ihm befindliche Person. Oder er blieb mit ausgebreiteten Armen auf dem Gehsteig stehen, ohne dass es zu einer Annäherung kam. Oder er saß – wie die hier ausgestellte Fotografie dokumentiert – neben einem Telefon und wartete auf einen Anruf. Nichts passiert. Menschliche Kommunikation ist schon immer von Wartezeiten und Leerstellen geprägt. Auch wenn die aktuelle digitale Entwicklung sie verkürzt, bleibt doch eine Wartezeit als Sehnsuchtszeit bestehen. Kovandas subtile und irritierende Verschiebungen des Alltags bündeln für den Moment das Bewusstsein und öffnen die Augen für das Unerwartete.
Jiří Kovanda became well known through his performances and interventions during the late seventies on the streets of Prague, where he almost incidentally interrupted everyday life for a moment. Like a common thread, the (im-)possibility of interpersonal communication weaves its way through his early performances. For example, he unexpectedly turned around on the escalator and fixed his gaze on the person behind him. Or he stopped in the middle of the pavement and held his arms out to his sides without making contact to anyone else. Or he sat – as the exhibited photograph here demonstrates – next to a telephone and waited for a call. Nothing happened. Human contact is always characterised by times of waiting and gaps. Even though the current digital development shortens those periods, there remains a time of waiting as a time of yearning. Kovanda’s subtle and confusing re-arrangements of everyday life heighten our awareness of the moment and open our eyes for the unexpected.
